So what’s so crazy about this toy porn movie for overgrown boys? (Let’s face it, this is one helluva opportunity for geeks to unite).Well, it features robots. Not just any robots, but characters we have grown to love during our childhood. And if you’re not familiar, with the Autobots and Decepticons saga, you’d still enjoy watching this movie.
Being a Transformer cartoon series fan that I was (all I know is that I watch the TV series way back then, but I’m not obsessed with its toys), I have some reservations about this movie. It’s not like every cartoon-adapted movies were a blockbuster hit, right? But I indulged my husband into watching this film. We regularly watch movies even before we got married.
Going back to the movie, it’s a jolly good fun for everyone- transformers fan or not. The jaw-dropping scenes which are conveyed through the use of CGIs are engaging to watch. (Just take for example when all the Autobots gathered around Mickaela and Sam). Michael Bay never fails to come up with the ideas on how to reinvent old ideas- in this case, a behemoth subculture in the 1980s. He carefully universalized the Hasbro franchise into a larger than life film. Which is I’m sure took a lot of time brainstorming. Since the target of this movie are those who grew up with profound memories of Transformers, he made it sure that the movie has the best action scenes that sure to talk about this season.
But the movie doesn’t center on the robots. (However, it the fact that the robots play the leads is undeniable.) Shia LaBeouf, who played the role of Sam Witwicky, managed to portray a jittery and goofy teenager who has got himself a new car. Sam tries to impress Mickaela played by Megan Fox. (Remember Lindsay Lohan’s archrival in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen?) It turns out that Sam’s yellow Camaro is Bumblebee, an Autobot assigned to protect Sam from the Decepticons who are trying to get hold of the broken glasses which Sam inherited from his grandfather. The glasses holds the key to the exact location of Allspark- the life-giving cube which Megatron was carrying with him when he crashed to Atlantic ice hundreds of years ago.
The boy-and-machine relationship which was fondly stored in the memories of the 80’s kids who watched the TV cartoon Transformers will be relived in this movie. I especially like the scne where Autobots tried to sneak around Witwicky’s garden. It’s amusing how Optimus Prime had to tiptoed so that Sam’s parents wouldn’t see him. As for as the visual effects, the seamless transformation from automobiles to giant robots and vice versa is inarguably astonishing. Flawless. Perfect. Okay, I’m running out of words to describe it.
However, there are some pointers that I didn’t like. As fas as I remember it was Jazz which uses excerpts from radio as means of communication. Or was it Blaster? I’m sure it wasn’t Bumblebee though. And Optimus Prime’s flame is not bad at all. What’s cheesy is the way we can see his lips move! Kinda creepy for a robot, right?
It’s a good move for the marketing team not to show off the robots on the thetrical trailer. Although I had to admit it frustrated me then. Well, it was worth the wait.
Next to my fave movie this year which is the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, this comes second. This is one movie you shouldn’t be waiting until it hits the DVD stands. It’s a must-see film on big-screen!!! I can’t believe I’ll be this hooked up with this movie. I’m even considering buying Cheska her very own Bumblebee. Hmm… I think I have another case against Nico…
